STILLWATER, Minn. – Authorities plan no criminal charges against the candidate for the Minnesota Legislature who led a profanity-charge anti-police protest over the weekend. In a joint statement Washington County Attorney Pete Orput and Sheriff Dan Starry, said that that although John Thompson’s comments were “grossly inappropriate,” they didn’t violate felony statutes. Before the protest, the statement said, they had been in touch with protest organizers in hopes of facilitating a peaceful event. Even so, they said, Thompson “chose to admonish the men and women wearing the Sheriff’s Office uniform that were present to protect all citizens in this instance.”
