ST. PAUL, Minn. – So date six Democrats have declared their candidacy to replace the late Jim Hagedorn in Congress from southern Minnesota:
> Warren Lee Anderson, of North Mankato, a retired appliance store employee and convenience stre clerk.
> Sarah Brakebill-Hacke, of Preston, a political consultant. A Yale graduate now finishing advanced work at Cambridge in England.
> Richard DeVoe, of Red Wing, a bookstore owner.
> Jerry Ettinger, of Austin, retired chief of Austin-based food giant Hormel.
> George H. Kalberer, of Northfield, a personal financial adviser..
> Richard Painter, of Mendota Heights, ethicist at the University of Minnesota law school.
Dan Feehan, of North Mankato, who ran twice against Hagedorn and list, has decided not to try for the MN-1 seat a third time.
Coast to coast. So to speak. The First Congressional District comprises 19 counties across southern Minnesota, plus half of Cottonwood County and of Rice County.
Ballot calendar
Democrats will vote in a special primary election in May on who will be their candidate. At issue is the remaining few months of Hagedorn’s term. Hagedorn died last month. There also will be a Republican primary with perhaps 11 candidates. It is possible that more candidates — Democrats, Republicans and others — will file candidacy papers before 5 p.m. Tuesday, which is the secretary of state’s deadline for a place on primary ballots.
