WINONA, Minn. – Residents evacuated the 12-story Valley View Tower when fire alarms sounded and smoke poured from the sixth floor. Firefighters traced the smoke to a stove. They shut off the breaker to the stove and hauled it out. The apartment tenant explained using a deep fryer earlier in the day and must have bumped the knob accidentally. The knob melted, causing the small fire. The fire itself was extinguished by the time that firefighters arrived. Despite the smoke, the tenant reported no injuries and was feeling otherwise well. The alarm was a little after 2 p.m. Valley View Tower, operated by the Public Housing Authority, has 130 units.
