AUSTIN, Texas – The Orionid meteor shower, which typically has 15 to 70 shooting stars per hour, will peak Friday with Earth’s passage through Halley Comet’s tail. The astro-tracking site EarthSky said that southeast Minnesota is generally a good place to see the show because of relatively mild light pollution. Clear skies were forecast by the National Weather Service.

Meteorites are tiny pieces of dirt and debris that burn up as they enter Earth’s atmosphere. The Orioinid meteors visit between October 20 and 24 every year. In Minnesota this year the peak is Friday. The name Orionid from the place in the sky where they appear — near the constellation Orion.
