WASHINGTON – A University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse grad, Cindy Marten, was named deputy U.S. education secretary by President-elect Biden. Besides her UW-L degree in elementary education, Marten holds a master’s from the University of California, San Diego. She was a classroom teacher for 17 years in San Diego, mostly in ethnically diverse and economically challenged schools. She established a bi-literacy program, a hands-on school garden program, integrated arts education, quality after-school and preschool programs, a daycare center for employees’ children, and a community health and wellness center. Since 2013 she has been superintendent of San Diego schools.
