DES MOINES, Iowa – The Des Moines-based Animal Rescue League of Iowa rescued 46 sick cats and kittens from a house so filthy that ARL team members were overwhelmed with ammonia that burned their eyes. Cats were everywhere, even walking on their own feces, the League said. .Many kittens were so thin they could barely walk. Some eyes were matted shut from infection. Upper respiratory infections had some cats constantly sneezing. All had fleas and ear mites. The League did not disclose where in Iowa the house was located. It said social workers would tend ro people living in the house.

Caged for trip to vet. The first fresh air these felines have breathed in weeks.
