WINONA, Minn. – The first Winonan to receive coronavirus vaccine took the pinch at the Winona Health clinic. After the injection, Joseph Kaiya, of the Winona Health staff, called the vaccine a signal of hope at the end of the tunnel. “As a healthcare worker I’m excited,” he said. “Being able to break the back of the virus and just being able to get back to our normal lives that for me is the most exciting part.”

Kaiya is a hospitalist whose focus is on caring for patients while they are hospitalized. He holds a medical degree the University of Nairobi. His residency, in internal medicine, was at Highland hospital in Alameda, California. He has done additional studies in public Health at the University of Minnesota. He recently moved to Rochester where his family resides.
