WINONA, Minn. – A passerby heard a woman yelling from the bathroom window of an apartment: “He won’t let me leave.” Police arrived and found the woman, who by then had left the building. She said that Emilo Ryan Martinez, 18, had locked her in the apartment during an argument. When she attempted to leave, the woman said, Martinez grabbed her by the collar. “You’ll have to kill me to get out of this apartment,” she quoted him. She grabbed a light bulb and struck him in the head and ran to the bathroom and locked the door. Martinez told much the same story to police, who noticed the broken lightbulb and cuts on his head. All he wanted, he said, was for the woman to explain why she was upset. Why did he eventually let the woman go? He said he knew police were coming.  They quoted him: “I suppose not letting her leave is a crime.” They out him under arrest.

Martinez. Charge: False imprisonment for incident in 900 block of West Fifth Street.
