WINONA, Minn. – Karen Gunvor (Malcolmsson) Peavey, 86, of Winona, died at Benedictine St. Anne nursing home of cancer. She immigrated from Sweden at age 18 and trained as a scrub nurse in exchange for housing and education to learn English and obtain U.S. citizenship. In the Chicago area she was a school “room mother,” a PTA parent, a den mother, and a second mom to neighborhood kids. She was a nurse’s aide for 20 years until retiring to Winona to be near family.
