WINONA, Minn. – A Winona County jail inmate was beaten badly by a fellow inmate and rushed to the hospital. Sheriff Ron Ganrude said the injured inmate suffered a one-inch cut on his left ear, bleeding on his left cheek, and a swelled eye. The attack occurred about 4:40 p.m. in an open cell bock where inmates can mingle. Jailers ended the attack by pulling the assailant off the victim. The victim, a 55-year-oLd Winona man, had arrived at the jail the day before on a parole violation. The man said he didn’t know his assailant — not even his name. The victim said he had been standing at a sink when the assailant, who had been pacing between his cell a and the open cell block area, punched him to the floor and kept punching. The victim never lost consciousness. Jailers said the assailant was Nicholas John Deppe, 27, who had been in custody since September 27 for assault and several other serious charges. After the jail assault Deppe was charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
