WINONA, Minn.  — Longtime City Council member Michelle Alexander announced for mayor. Alexander, a real estate broker and landlord, said she has no issue with incumbent Mayor Mark Peterson, but she added: “The time is right.” Peterson was elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2016. He hasn’t announced his intentions about a third term. When Alexander first ran for the Council in 2010 at age 33, she claimed her biggest asset was her age. At the time the youngest Council members were in their 50s. As a landlord, Alexander flaunted her access to young people. “I’ll look for different solutions,” she said. Alexander said she would promote tourism and artistic and cultural activities. She would also push for more assistance to small business owners, especially those downtown, she said.
