HIGHMORE, S.D. — Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg was charged with three misdemeanors but no felonies in a hit-and-run death in September. Prosecutors said there remained  questions about the crash but they didn’t have the facts to file more serious criminal charges. They misdemeanors:

>  Careless driving.

> Driving out of his lane.

>  Operating a motor vehicle while on his phone.

If convicted, Ravnsborg could be jailed 30 days and fned $500 fine on each charge. Prosecutors said Ravnsborg was not using his phone at the time of the crash, although he had been using it while driving about one minute before. At the time, Ravnsborg said thought he had struck a deer near Hillmore late at night as he was driving 220 miles home to Pierre from a Republican fundraiser in Sioux Falls. Ravnsborg  said he searched the unlit area on U.S. 14 with a cellphone flashlight and didn’t realize he had killed a man until the next day when he returned to the scene.
