ROCHESTER, Minn. — A county inmate was charged with attacking a jail deputy who tried to break up a jailhouse fight. Joseph Patrick Martin II, 32, of Rochester, who was being held on multiple assault charges, now has one more on his record. This, according to court documents, is what happened: The jail deputy saw Martin hit a fellow inmate with a food tray. The deputy tried to intervene, but Martin punched him in the head. A second deputy took Martin to the ground and cuffed him. The deputy who was hit was taken to a hospital to be checked out for scratches and a stiff shoulder and neck. The inmate who was attacked has declined to press charges, but not the county prosecutor.
