MADISON, Wis. – The five-diocese Wisconsin Catholic Conference of Bishops encouraged parishioners to comply with employer mandates for inoculations against Covid. But exceptions for reasons of religion or conscience cannot be theologically dismissed, the conference said in a message addressed to “brothers and sisters.” Most employers allow an alternative to inoculation, like masking or weekly testing, the bishops noted. Those alternatives, they said,  allow Catholics motivated by conscience to seek an exception from their employers formally. To priests, the bishops said: “Pastors should not feel compelled to issue documentation recognizing this conscientious objection and are recommended not to do so.” In short, the issue is best viewed as between individual Catholics and their employers, not employers and the church. It’s a position that minimizes litigation risks for the church.
