ST. PAUL, Minn. – The secretary of state’s office, where Tuesday’s primary election returns are tallied, will count local nonpartisan races first. The MN-1 Congressional tally will come later, although, said Secretary of State Steve Simon, probably not by much. “It won’t be a matter of days and days just a matter of hours,” he said. Simon explained that the tallying machinery was designed for the usually scheduled August primary election. The southern Minnesota Congressional race was added to the ballot later as a special election after the death of Jim Hagedorn. Simon called it a one in a million situation — a primary election and a special election on the same date. “The problem is that both elections can’t occupy the same space on the election night reporting system,” Simon said. The usual local nonpartisan races on the front of the ballot will be counted first, then the backside Congressional numbers, he said.
