GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. – A Winona outdoorsman, John Merchlewitz, has been elected president of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association with a mission to rebuild the association’s fundraising capabilities after 15 months of Covid setbacks. “This is a critical time for Minnesota’s deer and deer hunters,” said Merchlewitz. Many banquets and fundraising activities have been cancelled and slowed the associations’ work against chronic wasting disease, which threatens the state’s wild deer herd. The association and its 62 chapters have raised $43 million for projects since founded in 1985.  One million deer hides have been donated and raised $5.5 million.
