CENTERVILLE, Wis. – The abandoned Old Centerville Curling Club ice arena, whose distinctive humped roof of corrugated tin was a landmark along Highway 35, burned to the ground. Firefighters from Trempealeau, five miles away, responded about 11:30 p.m., Sunday. Fire crews from Arcadia, Dodge, Ettrick, Galesville and Holmen were called in. Not until 6 a.m. did the last firefigters go home. The rink was built hastily in 1948 and was Centerville’s largest structure. It was replaced jn 1996 with a new building a block away.
Quonset Hut design. Tin was cheap after World War II, which made the Quonset design an economical choice. Remnants were still smoking at dawn.
