OMAHA, Neb. – A union that threatened to idle the nation’s freight railroads until President Biden intervened has now reached anew tentative agreement with the railroads. The five-year deal calls for 24% pay raises. The deal, negotiated by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, still needs acceptance by 12 other rail unions. Although no freight lines were shut down by the threatened strike, the Amtrak passenger service suspended its long-distance trains, including Winona and LaCrosse stops, rather than risk trains being stranded en route on tracks owned by freight lines.
