ST. PAUL, Minn. – Last summer’s drought and this year’s late spring are worrying state public health officials about ticks. Elizabeth Schiffman, vector-borne diseases supervisor, said that risks will be unusually high in coming weeks. Lyme disease, carried by deer ticks, is the greatest worry. Deer ticks, she said, once were limited to central eastern Minnesota along Wisconsin border. Now they’ve spread statewide, she said.
Extracting ticks
Wear repellant and check your body as soon as you’re out of the woods. Pull them straight out with a tweezers. Don’t twist – or their heads may break off with the toxic jaws still embedded.
