MINNEAPOLIS – The judge in the Derek Chauvin murder trial, for the May 2020 death of George Floyd, denied a request for a new trial. Judge Peter Cahill said he was unimpressed by Chauvin’s arguments that prosecutors had engaged in misconduct and also that there was jury misconduct. The judge’s decision came in the morning ahead of a sentencing hearing for Chauvin. The request for a new trial was based on Judge Cahill’s decision not to change the location of the proceedings or to sequester the jury for the duration of the trial. The request also claimed that included expert witnesses for Chauvin had been intimidated.
