MINNEAPOLIS – Two men were sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing a real estate agent in a bizarre 2019 revenge scheme. For Cedric Lamont Berry of Minneapolis and Berry Alexander Davis of suburban Brooklyn Park, there will be no probation, said Judge Peter Cahill. The two men, both 42, were part of a group who lured real estate agent Monique Baugh to a phony house showing in Maple Grove, and then kidnapped her in a U-Haul moving van and tortured and shot her in a Minneapolis alley. Separately Baugh’s manfriend was shot but survived. Others in the case:
> Lyndon Wiggins, 36, who prosecutors say had a falling out with Baugh’s manfriend over a drug deal.
> Elsa Segura, 29, a former probation officer, who is accused of setting up the fake home-showing.
> Shante Cheriece Davis, who is charged with being an accomplice after the fact.
At the sentencing Berry and Davis’ hearing, Baugh’s mother, Wanda Williams Baugh, asked for the longest sentence possible. Through tears she said: “I’m asking you, your honor, to please use your power to make sure they spend the rest of their miserable, insignificant lives in prison”
Unusual sentencing
Judge Peter Cahill said Berry and Davis will begin their life sentences only after serving concurrent sentences of 13 and 20 years for kidnapping and attempted murder. Cahill noted it’s unusual to structure shorter first — before a life term — but he doesn’t want either man out in society ever again. “If they change the law some day and you’re entitled to release, I don’t think it would be appropriate,” he said.
