WINONA, Minn. – State Representative Gene Pelowski, D-Winona, said some new taxes proposed by Governor Tim Walz may not be needed. The governor hasn’t accounted fully for an influx of $3 billion in federal assistance that can be expected to cover most the deficit forecast by the state budget office. There likely will less of a deficit than the governor has calculated, Pelowski said in an interview on KWNO radio. About Walz’ proposal to increase spending on pandemic-related problems, Pelowski said, “We’ll be having hearings on where exactly that money is going and how it’s going to impact our budget.” Pelowski said it’s unlikely that the Legislature will go along with tax increases in the governor’s proposal.
