BYRON, Minn. – A man was shot fatally near Oxbow Park north of Byron, apparently by trespasser who then threw down a gun and fled on foot The victim, whom police initially identified to news media only as 70 years old, took a bullet in the upper chest. As police reconstructed what happened, the victim went outside to check on a suspicious vehicle and was shot. A short time after police arrived, they located a suspect in an outbuilding half a mile away and took him into custody without incident. He was William Shillingford, 31, of Kasson. Police said there was no apparent connection between Shillingford and the man who was shot. Why Shillingford was in the Oxbow Park area, 14 miles from Kasson, was unclear. The shooting was just after 10:30 p.m. in the 5000 block of  County Road 105.
