WINONA Minn. – A survey found 53% of people in the Winona School District see $87 million as a “fair price” for proposed improvements to be financed through taxes. Further, 56% support or strongly support the recommendation of a community task force to keep all three elementary schools open. Only 8% supported a new elementary to replace current schools. The survey pointed out that a new school would cost 30% to 40% more than remodeling the three existing elementary school. Other findings:
> 82% agree that Winona schools provide good value.
> 75% agree that the School Board and administration perform well.
> 76% rate instructors as excellent or good.
> 56% gave the district a favorable financial management rating
What’s ahead
The School Board will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday to vote on the recommendation from a community yask force. The next step will be placing a referendum, possibly on the November general election.
Methodology
The Morris Leatherman polling firm of Minneapolis contacted 400-plus people by telephone. All lived in the School District 19 years or more. They were selected scientifically to represent the population. The sample was an even male-female balance. Political affiliation: Democrats, 42%; Republicans, 38%; independents, 20%.
