Chauvin was sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd. The sentence, issued by Judge Peter Cahill, fell short of the 30 years that prosecutors had requested; With good behavior, Chauvin, 45, could be paroled after 15 years. Asked before the sentence was pronounced if he had something to say, Chauvin turned toward the Floyd family and expressed condolences. He was brief because of what he called “some additional legal matters at hand” — presumably a reference to a federal civil rights trial he still faces. Floyd’s family members had earlier addressed the court and asked for the maximum penalty, which would have been 30 years.
