WINONA, Minn. – Darrel L. Poffenberger, 93, of Winona, a state auditor, died at Cottagewood nursing home in Rochester. He spent seven years as a deputy auditor for the Mantorville city government and then 12 years in Winona in various state government positions. From 1974 to 1989, he attended night classes at Winona State University and earned his degree. Earlier, in his 20-year U.S. Navy career, he helped establish an anti-submarine center in Italy. At Norfolk, Virginia, he was attached to a command that tracked Russian submarines.
