KENOSHA, Wis. – A jury acquitted 18-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse on all counts including homicide and recklessness with an AR-15 rifle during unrest on Kenosha streets in August 2020. Rittenhouse began to cry as the verdict was read, then collapsed into his chair and hugged his lead attorney. The trial had divided the community. Anticipating the verdict, crowds gathered outside the courthouse.

> Some groups saw the acquittal as a triumph for gun rights advocates and for self-defense arguments.

> Other groups saw the verdict as failing the memory of three people shot by Rittenhouse, two of whom died.

> Black groups pointed to the fact that Rittenhouse, who is white, had driven into Kenosha from his Illinois home and inserted himself into local racial unrest following a white police officer shooting and crippling a black man.
