WEST SALEM, Wis. – President Trump repeated his campaign his mantra that the coronavirus is a media-fueled political tool. To thousands of supporters he said the pandemic would cease to be in the news November 4, the day after the election. Trump criticized the Democratic governor of Wisconsin for initiatives to mitigate the pandemic, including caps on bars and gathering places. “You gotta tell your governor. We gotta open up our states. Does anybody like your governor? Do you like him?” Trump asked the crowd. Thew crowd booed the governor. Trump didn’t name Evers and seemed ill-informed about Wisconsin ballots: “Who likes the governor? Is he gonna win reelection?” Trump said. Evers’ term runs int 2023.

The scoreboard at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway, where Trump spoke, was headed with “2020.” Trump linked the auto-racing site to the COVID pandemic: “We’re turning the corner. We’re rounding, like this race track.” There were lots of red MAGA caps in the audience but few face masks and no social distancing.

The president was an hour-plus late for the rally. The rally was his second of three for the day. Trump began in Lansing, Michigan, and ended after dark in Des Moines, Iowa. In West Salem the day was cloudy and in the mid30s.
