MADISON, Wis. – Tuition and fees will be waived at 12 University of Wisconsin campuses for new students from families earning less than $62,000 a Year. One exception: UW-Madison. Jay Rothman, the UW System president, projected that 8,000 students will be eligible. The waivers will create opportunity for those of lower social economic needs, Rothman said. Also, he said, the waivers will create more college graduates to support Wisconsin’s long-term economic viability. The first year of the program will cost $13.5 million, Rothman said. He hopes for funding from the Legislature to sustain the program long term. The waivers are renewable for four years. They are for Wisconsin residents only.
