WASHINGTON – The 24-year-old LaCrosse man charged in the January siege of the U.S. Capitol was a part-time soldier in the Wisconsin National Guard, the Military Times reported. The newspaper cited online records that Abram Markofski enlisted in the Guard in July of 2019 and had been promoted to the rank of private first class. His unit was the 1st Battalion of the 128th Infantry Regiment whose headquarters is in Eau Claire with units in Abbotsford, Arcadia, Menomonie, Rice Lake, New Richmond, River Falls and Niellsville. About 200 members of the 128th were deployed to Afghanistan in 2019 on a security support mission and returned in 2020. It was thought but nit confirmed that Markofski was in basic training at the time of the deployment.
