MIDLAND, Texas. –Gerald Dennis Laney, 80, of Midland, who had Winona connections, died at Midland Memorial Hospital. In 1962, his National Guard unit was activated to ensure the safety of James Meredith, the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi. For their duty, he and other members of his Guard unit were awarded full veteran benefits for life.
