WINONA, Minn. – The provost at Saint Mary’s University, Brian Schmisek, has packed his worldly goods to move to Illinois to become provost at a 400-student seminary in the Chicago Catholic diocese. His appointment at the seminary, University of Saint Mary of the Lake in exurban Chicago, begins in September. Schmisek has a background in theological studies. He had been at Saint Mary’s in Winona since 2019. He co-chaired an SMU strategic planning committee. He was key in developing a suite of new nursing and business programs.  It was on his watch that Saint Mary’s significantly downsized its Winona undergraduate faculty and programs in the face of enrollment losses.
