ST. PAUL, Minn. – Governor Tim Walz put the National Guard on standby duty to keep the peace as necessary for the trial of white police officer Kim Potter for shooting and killing of a black motorist. Daunte Wright died in a traffic stop in April. The city of Brooklyn Center, where the shooting occurred, had requested a Guard presence. So had Minneapolis, which has been a tinderbox for racial unrest since the police of slaying of George Floyd in 2020.
