WINONA, Minn. – The Common Book committee at Winona State chose “Marbles” by autobiographical cartoonist Ellen Forney as a centerpiece for courses university-wide in the fall. The book, whose full title is “Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me,” deals with mental illness, political activism, drugs, and the feminist punk Riot Grrrl movement. The book was published in 2012 and became a New York Times best-seller. Forney, who identifies herself as bisexual, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1998. She holds a psychology degree from Wesleyan University of Connecticut and teaches at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.
