More trans-con Winona rail traffic due

WINONA, Minn. – Train traffic through Winona on tthe new CPKC transcontinental rail system can be expected to grow 35%, This according to documents the Canadian Pacific filed with federal regulatory authorities. The figures are cited by Pam Eyden in a Big River magazine article on the merger’s impact. The railroad’s own data says that the CPKC’s Minneapolis to LaCrescent segment now averages 17 trains a day and will increase to 23 in 2027. There was a time when the Mississippi west-bank route carried 40 trains a day, but those trains were much shorter than today’s consists, some three miles long with multiple lead locomotives up front with a two-person crew and remote-controlled locomotive at mid-train and the rear. Critics of the merger have pointed out that the risk of catastrophic derailments and hazardous spills has increased exponentially. These trains connect CP’s existing trans-Canada routes to Mexico ports that the now-merged Kansas City Southern railroad served on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

Merged railroads. What impact?

More and longer trains

The number of trains is expected to double through some towns on the Upper Mississippi. These CP data compare 2023 to 2027:

> South St. Paul to Red Wing, Wabasha, Winona  and LaCrescent: From 17 a day to 23.

> Lansing to Marquette and McGregor: From 5 to 11.

> Guttenberg to Dubuque and Bellevue: From 12 to 18.

> Sabula to Clinton: From 11 to 25.

> Mucatine: From 6 to 21.

Speed limits

The top speed allowed by federal agencies on Class 1 railroads generally is 72 miles an hour for freight trains, 79 for passenger trains. Larger towns with grade crossing generally impose stricter limits. In Winona it’s 30 mph. From Minnesota City to Homer there are 17 mainline crossings – at t69h Street, 54th, 41st, Bierce, West Fifth, West Broadway, West Wabasha, South Baker, Sioux, Grand, Huff, Main, Franklin, Hamilton, Mankato, Louisa and Ann. At these crossings, street traffic stops, the trans-con trains don’t.

Good ‘ol days?

Winona once was a bustling railroad hub with five railroads and dozens and dozens street crossings. It was a grim joke you couldn’t get anywhere in town without being stopped by a train. Over the years, most crossings have been barricaded and street traffic diverted to thoroughfares. Spectators at Winona Teachers College football games could count on four or five trains passing the field every game. Play stopped until the smoky and noisy distractions passed, then resumed.

Major railroads today.  Canadian Pacific Kanas City (formerly CP, Soo and Milwaukee). The Union Pacific has trackage rights from LaCrosse for one train a day each way.

Back then: Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific; Chicago & Northwestern, Green Bay & Western, Winona & St. Peter; and Winona & Southwestern.

Owatonna Pride event: Good time had by all anyway

OWATONNA, Minn. – Organizers of a festival to celebrate Pride Month held their breath that it would all come off — after weeks of overt and under-the-breath homophobic disparagement. The events, sponsored by a gay group, Rainbowatonna, started with prayers at the Associated Church. The event moved to Owatonna’s Central Park for food, music and a family-friendly drag show. Later there was an adult drag show at a bar and an after-party event at the Owatonna Event Center. Nathan Black, the lead organizer, was pleased as events turned out but noted there had been concerted “very intentional, premeditated bigotry.”

> Venue harassment. The upsccale Torey’s steakhouse and bar backed out as site for the  drag show after  harassing messages left management and the staff concerned for their safety.

> Anonymous messages.  Hateful emails, calls and a handwritten letter were received at Associated Church, where for the prayer service was planned.

> Mayoral visit. Mayor Tom Kuntz showed up the Associated Church a few days in advance and asked a church aide about the Pride events. He wanted contact information for the person who would be giving the sermon and asked whether there would be “stripper poles” in the sanctuary. “Bizarre,” said the aide.

> Mayor’s posture. Black, a Pride organizer who also is a chaplain, had asked Mayor Kuntz to issue a proclamation declaring July 8 Rainbowatonna Day. The mayor’s responded no: “I am so sorry but I just can’t do the proclamation.” He explained: “As a christen (sic) I just want to encourage all of us to follow Gods (sic) commandments and am hoping your service follows Gods (sic) words.”

> Mayor’s prayer. Mayor Kuntz posted a prayer online in advance of the Pride events: “We pray for wisdom as we know of upcoming events where sin and brokenness will be celebrated and where sexually explicit acts will be normalized.”

Was an emergency landing, not a crash landing

BLAINE, Minn. – The pilot of single-engine plane on a 60-mile hop between suburban airports lost oil pressure and set down on the shoulder of a busy four-lane highway. The pilot was unhurt, the plane undamaged. This was about 2 p.m. on 125th Avenue in Blaine.  After climbing out of the plane and surveying the situation, the pilot decided not to call out an aviation mechanic to fix the oil problem. So rather than fly back to Cambridge, he asked police to call a flatbed truck to haul the plane back. The pilot had been cleared for an emergency landing at the Blaine airport, but worried whether the engine could make it that far, he put down on an open section of the highway. Police quoted the pilot that he had 13 years flying experience.

Blunt-force injuries claim Michael Protzman at Mayo

MILLVILLE, Minn. – The QAnon cult leader Michael Protzman died at Mayo Clinic after a dirt-bike accident at the world-class Spring Creek Motocross track, the news agency VICE reported. The accident occurred June 30 at the motocross track 25 miles from Rochester. But that the victim was Protzman had been unnoted by news media until VICE picked up a tip. To VICE, the state Health Department confirmed the death of Protzman.  He was 60. Protzman died of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the death certificate. Online Protzman called himself Negative 48. By trade he was a demolition contractor in the Tacoma, Washington, suburb of Federal Way.

PRoTZMAN michael QANON 1 - Winona Journal

Protzman. Shopping with a buddy for a bike. Known for a daredevil streak, also for conspiracy theories without allegiance to facts, truth or common sense.

QAnon profile

QAnon had murky online origins in 2017. Contributors used pseudonyms and codes in advancing apophenic theories that linked unrelated things they purported to make sense of events. One example, of which Protzman was the prime progenitor:  Donald Trump really was John F. Kennedy in disguise who would re-instate his Trump persona as president and install JFK Jr., his son,  as vice president – this despite the fact President Kennedy had been assassinated in 1963 and his son killed in a 1999 plane crash. As whacky as such QAnon conspiracy theories were, Protzman became god-like to QAnon believers. He acquired thousands of cult followers who drank the Kool-Aid and financed his travel, many of whomaccompanied him on his travels. These travels included  18 months attending Trump presidential campaign rallies.

Spring Creek Motocross profile

The motocross track is on 500 acres of forested land between Dumfrees and West Albany on State Highway 60 west of Wabasha and northeast Rochester. The track dates tn1988, when the husband and wife team of John and Greta Martin bought the 56-acre Perry Hendricks farm. John had been a CanAm and ATK factory racer and 1985 National Hare Scrambles champion. Greta had been school teacher. They bought more acres over the years. Today it’s considered one of the premier motocross facilities in the world. The Martins promote the track as a family destination. There is picnicking and a beach in Spring Creek, a tributary to the Zumbro River. They call a concession shop the Pit Stop and sell dirt-bike photos, posters and programs.
